The new Sussex Coast College Hastings Campuses at Ore Valley and Station Plaza were officially declared opened by HRH The Princess Royal at a ceremony attended by local dignitaries, civic guests, local employers and the press. In addition, staff and students gathered in the iconic Atrium at Station Plaza to celebrate the completion of the two new buildings at the heart of the Hastings community.

The Princess made a grand entrance, escorted by the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex and was greeted by College Chairman,  Kenneth Melsom  MBE JP,  the High Sheriff of East Sussex, the Chairman of East Sussex County Council, the Mayor of Hastings, Chief Constable of Sussex Police and governors . The Princess was given a tour of the building  by Principal, Janak Patel, and  took time to speak to a lot of students, most of  whom  were smiling from ear to ear afterwards!

Meanwhile guests and dignitaries were treated to a feast of entertainment in the Atrium with an art exhibition, a mini fashion show, and excerpts from the “Hair” the musical  by Performing Arts students. More performances were given by Academy 6 as well as many other interesting student demonstrations  from students based at Ore Valley and the Motor Vehicle Centre.

Princess Anne then declared the building open and was presented with a magnificent  seahorse brooch  made by  art student, Philippa Haines,  and a beautiful posy of flowers.

Sadly, Suki and Max who attended the ceremony on our behalf couldn’t convince The Princess to pose for a photo however we did get our new-found friend and Executive Director for Skills at the College, Dr. Mohan Chana, to pose in front of the newly unveiled commemorative plaque….Thanks Mo!

The 90 minute session entitled ‘Creativity, Team Work and Leadership in Business’ was made up of a series slides presented by Suki and Dominic which reflected on their experiences of each element both in employment pre-Condisco and, most importantly, their experiences in the first two years of Condisco. The session was interspersed with videos which were used to highlight specific points and two exercises designed to get the students thinking about the application of certain parts of the talk in the real world.

Commenting after the session, Dr. Suki Bahra said ‘It is important to us as individuals and as a company that we do not lose sight either of those around us or the challenges that we face in business. Being given the opportunity to speak to students gave us the chance to reflect on the importance of each part of the session on our business as well as being able to share those with students who will, at some stage, have to apply their learning to their own careers’.

Robin Hugh, Curriculum Leader for Business at Sussex Coast College said ‘I was very impressed that Condisco had tailor-made a presentation and set of activities for the two units I am delivering. The students remained focussed for the whole 90 minutes and have since expressed their appreciation for the work Condisco did for them. I would definitely like to work with Condisco again as they gave us exactly what our enterprise course demands; effective and professional engagement with entrepreneurs.’

The ceremony was designed to reward some of the outstanding individuals that were hired through the scheme the previous year (and continue to be hired) and highlight some of their greatest achievements. The ceremony was attended by a number of key local businesses as well as other distinguished individuals including the Principle of the College and Amber Rudd MP (Hastings & Rye)

Visitors from countries as near as Sweden, Germany and Spain, to as far afield as Brazil, Japan and Australia, visited the stand and held advanced discussions to secure exclusivity on these products within their region. And their sectors also covered a wide range, from hotels and hostels, to play centres and camping sites, to high end retailers and high street shops. What is certain is that SleepAngel has created an amazing buzz within the home textile and medical markets. So don’t be surprised when you find yourself lying on one yourself soon….just remember where you heard about them first!
